You are going to hear a lot today about how this is the most important election of your lifetime. It might be. It might not be. That’s actually a thing for historians to decide. I am here to tell you that every election is important and I have a part of a letter from George Washington to make my point today.
It is now no more that toleration is spoken of as if it were the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights, for, happily, the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.
It would be inconsistent with the frankness of my character not to avow that I am pleased with your favorable opinion of my administration and fervent wishes for my felicity.
May the children of the stock of Abraham who dwell in this land continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants—while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree and there shall be none to make him afraid.
Less than two weeks ago there was a mass shooting at a synagogue. Hate crime is up. I am not cannot and will not claim an election with change any of this. Instead I will point out that the ideals Washington expresses there have been in my head since that event and they are ideals we have fallen short of again and again. Because America is a nation made of people. And people falter. Often badly. Often terribly. But they are ideals to strive for. That’s what America has always been about. Finding a better way, working towards it. It’s always a work in progress and we can always do better but we should always be trying to do better. The government of our first President tried to strive towards these ideals of religious freedom, of not just tolerance but acceptance. Civil rights are not a thing handed out upon high. He notes that here. They are a human right, they are owed, not earned. I do not believe our current government or many of our current politicians are making any attempt to strive towards this. People are afraid because of what they are and we have promised they did not have to be. And part of it is because people don’t vote. When everyone votes Politicians have to appeal to the middle more. They have to seek compromise and work together. When most people do not it’s only the fringes they have to appeal towards and it sends us down a dangerous path. So yes, this election is important. Every election is though and it’s crucial you vote if you are an American because it is your right. Because it is your moral duty. The American Experiment still has the potential to be something great but it takes action from all of us. I firmly believe in the ideals espoused in the founding of my country but they are not words written on paper to be forgotten, it takes us to never forget them and to do what we must to live up to them. And most importantly to hold those who represent us accountable to them. I am posting Chloe Bennet today for two reasons. First cause she was wearing a shit that said vote and I thought maybe people would read it if it was on a pretty girl’s chest. Second because she is very much America. Second because I think she’s pretty and I liked her Calvin Klein shoot. Go vote. Please. Today I want to fuck Chloe Bennet.
