This post is very much about Mad Men and my love for the show. Yesterday I rambled a little about loss and the end of things. I mam feeling the end of Mad Men pretty strongly at this point, tomorrow is of course the last episode. I will avoid spoilers here because I realize some people are waiting to watch the final episodes until you have all of them to watch in a chunk. Now of course, you are wrong (looking at you lunoboom)but I still will hold back on any spoilers. I am thinking about January Jones though. Betty Draper is a very complex character and I often feel like January Jones gets like zero credit for that. A lot of people feel Betty is flat and childish and somehow this makes January Jones a bad actor. I think they are very wrong but there is a lot of misreading of Betty because people very much wanted her to make a feminist journey on the show like it was hinted she might and I think they were angry she didn’t. That journey was for others and speaks to a whole other problem where people confuse a female character who is not strong as a bad character rather than a complex one who just isn’t necessarily what you want to emulate. In a lot of ways Betty can be childish and exists in a state of arrested development emotionally. This is not bad acting or bad writing, it is a wonderful cometary on her being a reflection of the world around her, she grows over the course of the show but yes, she can be childish and it is because she exists in a wold where women are infantalized. Remember, she is sent to a psychiatrist for “hysteria”, which was just having wants and desires that exist beyond being a trophy bride, and the doctor calls in reports to her husband like he is her father. Because of course as a housewife in 1960 she is very much not an equal to her husband, he is as much a parent as a partner. I could go on. Trust me, I could talk about Betty forever and why she is fascinating but I want to point out January Jones playing her in such an interesting way is not bad acting. It’s actually quite brave to play a character in such a way that you don’t skew towards making them more likeable, you don’t smooth some rough edges so people like you more. Besides, anyone who has seen The Last Man on Earth can see she doesn’t just have Betty in her arsenal. But this is about all of that. Because I will miss Mad Men so much. And I will miss January Jones a whole lot as well, I thought her Betty was jut fascinating to watch. She didn’t show up here a ton despite being the most classically beautiful actress on the show and in part that was because she was so good at playing a character that… I don’t want to sleep with at all. But she is undeniably beautiful and talented and i will miss her. Today I want to fuck January Jones.
