As our political and social consciousness continues to evolve, Alan Quartermain stands revealed as just another white imperialist out to exploit the natives, and we begin to see that the overriding factor in James Bond’s psychological makeup is his utter hatred and contempt for women.

-Alan Moore

Alan Moor was talking about Ian Flemming’s writing there not the movies and the character more specifically than the subgenre but he did hit on a disturbing element of a lot of the media we consume.  As a horror fan I face it all the time but Bond movies have the same formula in the end.  You bring in a new girl, she exists to titillate and intrigue, you get to see some skin (more in horror, less in Bond but the idea is the same, we are to visually drink in her body), then she is dispatched because her purpose has been served.  These are the things that occur to me in adulthood that didn’t as a child.  I have long, long been a huge Bond fan, though I am sure I have followers far more devoted than I, but the feel of them has changed over the years.  We always knew that at least one of the pretty girls Bond beds will end up dead before the end of the movie, quite frankly the man’s cock seems to be amazingly bad luck, you’d almost believe bullet holes were sexually transmitted.  Obviously I saw Skyfall and I absolutely loved it, it is probably the best Bond movie since I was a kid but then I didn’t much like the Remington Steele era.  Interestingly the entire movie is about, at it’s core, the casualties of callous decision making, the disposable nature of people once they are used up.  I suppose the flaw in seeing them as resources rather than humans, they become very easy to toss aside.  It was impossible to not think of the nature of the countless Bond Girls over the years and to a degree the nature of celebrity.  This movie introduced me and likely many, many people to Bérénice Marlohe.  She is French and a veteran of French TV but largely unknown to the rest of us.  She may well remain that way because with celebrity we do have a habit of moving on very quickly, it’s not just what have you done for me lately it’s what are you doing for me right now.  It’s the nature of things but I suppose it is something we should think about from time to time.  We want what we want and there is no shame in that but I do sometimes wonder if we aren’t doing a disservice to someone, at least ourselves by being so fickle and seeing people as object.  I don’t know, I run this blog, I really can’t cast stones and this all was probably very boring to all of you but this is how it works, I write about whatever someone makes me think about.  Still, I don’t want to keep rambling so I’ll just go ahead and say today I want to fuck Bérénice Marlohe.
