Charli XCX posted a behind the scenes video of the making of her video for Boys this morning and there was a nice little interview video with her that surfaced yesterday and… well usually I’d make a joke about it not taking much to get me to post Charli XCX but that isn’t accurate. I mean, for one it’s no joke, a stiff wind can make me want to post Charli XCX but also it isn’t really a little thing. They both were just indicative of a lot of what I like about her. I am obviously attracted to her but I also find her thoughtful and intelligent and as always I am confused how others don’t other than perhaps we have been trained to take our pop stars less than serious. In the sense that pop is and has been primarily consumed by women and thus it is more frivolous and less important. I am not saying you are brainwashed if you don’t like Charli XCX, I am just saying we internalize certain biases. I love the Beatles and I grew up on a pretty steady diet of punk music but there is nothing about either that inherently make them more serious business musically. Neither is complex and they aren’t going to cause the planets to align, instead the importance comes from the fact that we always took it seriously and took the time to search for deeper meaning. One of the best literary trends in my lifetime that has slowly infiltrated all of the culture is moving genre works from the ghetto to serious consideration. The idea that anything can be well done and even low culture that is not traditionally considered high art might have a great deal to tell us about ourselves and the people who made it. But I have noticed that is mainly taken into consideration in genres that were largely male dominated. Horror and Superheroes and Science Fiction are all getting their day and scholarly discussion but there is a shelf of Harlequin Romance novels that used to sit in my Aunt’s childhood bedroom that are still considered an embarrassment to this day. So what I am saying is it’s ok if you don’t like Charli XCX and you don’t agree with me about her thoughtfulness and intelligence. But if you find yourself dismissive of pop stars, who let’s be honest are largely female and largely consumed by female listeners, you might want to ask yourself what is it about them that makes them unworthy of serious consideration. Anyway, I enjoyed the videos and I still think Boys is fantastic and a lot of fun. Today I want to fuck Charli XCX.

Here’s some Rihanna because that is never a bad thing. I saw some clips of her in that Valerian movie and she looked pretty good. So I am posting her. I don’t have a lot to say really. I saw someone say something about her looking like a “real woman” and thank god, I for one am tired of our celebrity culture being infected by what are obviously robots. Michael Bay and those Transformers movies have really done a number on pop culture. Thank god Rihanna is here for that. Not like all those cyborgs and automatons you see now. If I see one more Roomba on the red carpet I will lose it. Roombas are for vacuuming, not for acting. It’s not natural. So thank you, internet commenter, for pointing out that Rihanna is a real woman, and not made of circuits and metal, or in the rare instances made of wood by a puppet maker and brougth to life by magic. Someone needed to stand up that. Today I want to fuck Rihanna.
I saw Rihanna was in Barbados the other day and that is usually a good sign because while I am not an expert, I feel like this is the time of year we’ll get to see her in Barbados’ Harvest Festival, Crop Over. I was right. This always pays off. Recently I was talking about outfits Rihanna can pull off that normal people can’t and this qualifies. I mean, I couldn’t wear that certainly. I shouldn’t try for lots of reasons. Of course, in this case I think people can agree that the outfits are gorgeous, they always are at these Carnivals around the world, by the way, whatever your stance on Religion I think we should all say thank you to the Catholic Church for that at least, but as pretty as the outfits are, to really pull it off you have to be remarkably beautiful. So Rihanna can pull them off with ease but the rest of us would look pretty silly. Anyway, this year’s look is the best she has ever had. I assume. There aren’t pictures of her as a kid growing up in Barbados, so maybe she had some killer outfits then but of the ones I have seen because she was famous so the news was reporting on it, this years is the best. She looks amazing. From the color of her hair and how it compliments everything to the cut and the headdress, it’s all just awesome. Go look up more pictures of it. So I have included outfits from various years at Crop Over. I think. I think it’s name changed at once. I should just say at the Harvest Festival or something. Because obviously, that’s why you’re looking at this post. You are here for the pedantry. Today I want to fuck Rihanna.
Tinashe was in Galore and thank god for that. She is beautiful but it is just a chore to find pictures of her. Which makes no sense because look at how ridiculously beautiful she is. Shouldn’t everyone want pictures of her? I mean, I get there are commercial considerations and apparently no one thinks she is commercially viable because like other people I like it seems she is facing some struggles with her label ever getting another album out. But I am very tired, too tired to be clever or subtle so let me just put it bluntly: that all sounds extremely stupid to me. How could she not sell more magazines, look at her. As to selling records? I don’t know. Maybe she wouldn’t. I honestly couldn’t give two fucks because the quality of the music matters more and yes, I know, it’s a business, they want to make money. It can all burn for all I care. Major record labels can all take a flying leap and I wouldn’t shed a tear. Artists could still make their music and they sure as fuck aren’t making their money from their labels so I fail to see why record labels are a thing I want around at all. It can burn. Anyway, she is beautiful and that’s why she’s here, I probably shouldn’t keep going or who knows what terrible thing I could say that will link me to some crime if Colombia records is ever the victim of arson. Today I want to fuck Tinashe.
So I was just reading about Charli XCX on Stereogum and I’ll just link it here because it basically expresses the same complaints I have had recently so why not just let them go ahead and do it for me. I quite enjoyed Boys and the video this week, even if it is a song that clearly plagiarizes the personal, constant thoughts of @she-goes-to-eleven who also only ever thinks about boys. I will say, it made me feel kind of old though because as I was watching everyone looked familiar but I could only identify about half the boys. Which means I am probably old now officially. Though I am going to choose to tell myself that it is actually because of the fracturing of pop culture, some of those are youtubers and it is important we remind ourselves even the most incredibly famous youtube personality is actually not very famous at all. In the sense that fewer people know who they are than don’t. I have to remind myself that too when watching a video they start to become a familiar face but you have to realize not only does your mom not know who they are, your friends probably don’t either. Or at least some of your friends. Anyway, it is a fun pop song with a fun video and I will probably always appreciate Charli XCX’s intelligence and skill as a crafter of pop songs as well as the smart way she approaches pop culture in general. And at this point I will apparently always bemoan that her new album still isn’t out. God I hope that part changes some day. Anyway, here she is because I post her so much that it really annoys a few of my most devoted followers. Today I want to fuck Charli XCX.
After complaining about the lack of Rihanna last week, it seems someone listened this week and at the London premier of that movie that the verdict is it’s pretty but terrible we get a lot of Rihanna pictures. Maybe it’s the European press being more savvy, maybe it’s just the impact of this blog on the culture at large, it’s impossible to know which it is. The point is she looked good because that’s what she does. Like to an astonishing degree because her dress was a thing I felt like I shouldn’t like. I feel like on someone else I wouldn’t like it, it would feel too… I am not even sure, too a lot of things. It works for Rihanna though because she’s Rihanna. It’s what she does really. I guess that’s confidence or just being so sylish you can make things that shouldn’t work work Being beautiful probably helps, too, we don’t need to get into my shirt theory again, do we? Probably not. Anyway, here she is in dresses that I feel wouldn’t work on anyone else but are absolutely outstanding on her. Today I want to fuck Rihanna.
Man, today was a mess. I didn’t forget to post, I just couldn’t before now. Sorry those of you I panicked (one person noticed. It’s @femalecelebrityoftheday, I promise you he’s the only one who noticed). Anyway, here is Rihanna who probably would have been posted yesterday if I had been able to find decent pictures of her at this premier. Like, I could find picutres of a bunch of other people for this movie but not Rihanna. There were some like… blurry pictures taken through bushes or something. It’s like you have all these great pictures and then Rihanna hit the carpet and they’re like, no, no, photograph this one like we do Bigfoot. Back up 200 feet, put away the DSLR, get out the cardboard disposable camera with the cracked lens. Yeah, that’s it, now try to wait until someone is walking in front of her and good, great. We got her ankle, we can post that and people can debate if Rihanna is real or not. Look, I don’t want to tell anyone how to do their job, I am pretty far from a professional photographer but when you have a woman who is very famous, famously beautiful, and famously a fashion icon I would work to get a picture of her with her in frame and you know, focused. That’s what I’d do. But then, I am running this blog and those guys are in Hollywood hobnobbing with all sorts of people who couldn’t make it as real celebrities so take pictures of them for a living. Maybe they have it all figured out. Anyway, she was at a premier for a movie that starts with a V and I am going to misspell it so why bother. Trying is the first step to failure I always say. It’s for this movie I have heard of but know absolutely nothing about. I have heard it is either going to be great or terrible, which I have to say, is a pretty striking range of early returns. I don’t know, is Rihanna in it? Does she have a song in it? I don’t know, maybe they just invited her. That’s what I’d do if I have a movie. First of all she’s beautiful, so you get the bonus of just being around that but second of all you know she’s going to wear something great. You know she is. So it’s like this huge win. Even if your movie is terrible she is standing in front of the poster and your brain is going to go, I dunno, but suddenly this movie looks great. That’s residual Rihanna all over your poster. Call it something different though because that sounds kinda gross maybe. Work on it. You have marketing departments, I can’t do it all for your Hollywood. Anyway, Rihanna looks great in her pink dress that frankly most people couldn’t pull off but she can because she’s Rihanna. I like it. Today I want to fuck Rihanna.
Charli XCX was at the BBC and there were pictures and hey, that’s enough of an excuse for me. I though she looked pretty. She really has very nice hair. I liked it. I like her a lot and well, it takes just only the tiniest of nudge for me to post Charli. So here she is leaving the BBC and other things. And at stuff. It’s a theme, the theme being she is in all the pictures. Today I want to fuck Charli XCX.
So Demi Lovato has a new video out I guess? It’s in promotion of Amazon’s Prime Day, which is a thing I am aware of because Christ Amazon isn’t shy about advertising it. The world of music is such a strange landscape here in the future. When I was a kid you would have pilloried someone, even a popstar, for releasing their new single in promotion of a sale. Now it’s just one of the few ways to make real money with music. Lord, what have we done? Anyway, I haven’t actually seen or heard it or anything, so I can’t comment on the music. I have however seen promotional images and I can confirm that Demi Lovato is ridiculously beautiful. Also apparently it is about how she’s in a good place in her life and good for her. Also, the visual evidence backs that up because she has just looked amazing recently. And continues to. Good for her again. Today I want to fuck Demi Lovato.
Charli XCX was at the Warner Music party yesterday and I think she looked lovely. It was a pretty simple block top and pants but I liked it. She looked good. I like her a lot. Now, I am sure someone is aware Charli is with Atlantic but not aware of how the music industry works and wonders why she was at the Warners Music Party. Welcome to why Pop music isn’t very inventive and why even good artists are herded into a type. Atlantic Records, one of the legendary labels in all of music is owned by Atlantic Records Group, which owns dozens of labels, many of which were once independent. Atlantic Records Group is owned by Warner Music Group, which owns thousands of labels, many of which used to be independent of each other. The record industry, is by and large, owned part and parcel by a small handful of companies. The result isn’t just creative stifling but a lack of innovation, a slowness to adapt, and a result that means basically musicians make very little money from records anymore, that all goes to the label, and instead make all their money touring. Which is why I can’t wait for the dinosaurs that are the monolith record companies to finally die. It won’t really hurt the artists but it might free them. I know I have low key bitched a lot about labels in recent Charli posts, and you know, part of that is just that I grew up as a punk kid so I have a natural hatred of them anyway, but you know, I’m kind of bitter about the delays of Charli’s album. Because they of course want her to just keep making the same song. Something she has always refused to do and according to rumors has gotten her a lot of grief. In that like, when she wanted to release a free mix tape they stuck their grubby little fingers in that even to really sour it all. Who knows, I may not like the new album but I do know it will take her in a new direction because that is basically what she does. I’d like the chance to hear it and to be honest I don’t care what the Warner Monolith thinks of it. Anyway, on top of my anger at her label, she looked great. Her I adore. Today I want to fuck Charli XCX.
